BUDGET DEALS DON’T HAPPEN AT THE BEACH
State legislators have made more progress on their tans this summer than on a new budget. House and Senate leaders remain at odds with the Governor over several issues, but new funding for pre-k could be one area where both sides can agree, according to former Republican Governor Mark Schweiker.
“IT’S NOT GOING TO BREAK THE BANK”
Governor Wolf’s proposed budget invests $120 million in new funding for early childhood education, which would provide high-quality pre-k for 14,000 more Pennsylvania 3-and 4-year olds.
Speaking at the 2015 Kiwanis Early Education Summit today in Erie, Schweiker said, “We have a growing bipartisan coalition behind this. This isn’t some off to the side political pursuit or a break the bank pursuit. We think it’s an affordable commitment. We’re talking $120 million in a general fund budget north of $29 billion. It’s not going to break the bank. I would argue in the out years that it’s going to save dollars.”
